The Selchie’s Lament

My illustrated short story retells the Celtic tale of the selchie with the intent of discussing themes of abuse and domination. The story follows a magical seal that can shed its skin and transform into a beautiful woman. A man steals the woman’s sealskin, forces her to marry him, and eventually kills her as she tries to escape back to the sea. I want my audience to understand how ignoring and feeding into one’s own insecurities will result in the destruction of everything around them. These themes are presented through imagery that depicts the various aspects of control the man forces upon the selchie. There is a constant push and pull between the two main characters. One tries to dominate the other to satisfy their insecurity of weakness, which eventually leads to the massacre of all.
